A DJ’s Speaker Philosophy

 




Utah Valley DJs is a multi-service mobile DJ company. We can set the mood with great music at Provo weddings, Herriman quinceañeras, and Lehi corporate parties and anything else in Northern Utah that would benefit from high quality sound and a DJ with a professional attitude. However, when we were putting Utah Valley DJs together the focus was on ensuring we had enough sound for gymnasiums so we could project chest thumping bass to high school dances.

When we were buying subwoofers, we had a dilemma. Go with a direct radiating bass-reflex subwoofer like the JBL Eon718 or go with a folded horn subwoofer like the Cerwin-Vega CV EL 36DP which is commonly known as The Earthquake. As we did our research on what was going on in the industry, most DJ setups we saw used a JBL Eon718 or similar subwoofer from another brand paired with a full range speaker.

This made sense to us because the JBL Eon718 weighed 81 pounds. Part of being a mobile DJ in Utah is transporting your gear and setting it up. The less the gear weighs the easier it would be to transport and set up. The cost of the JBL Eon718 was also attractive because it cost around $1000 and we needed two subwoofers to complete our setup.

In business when you want to enter an established market you need a strategy. You already have other businesses conducting operations in that market. Knowing what you want to do and how you will do it ensure your first steps into the market will be decisive and measurable. When we thought about our strategy to enter the Utah DJ market we wanted to focus on high school dances. That gave us an opportunity to differentiate from other DJ businesses by going with long-throw projection subwoofers. We chose THE EARTHQUAKE for Utah Valley DJs so we could DJ outdoors and in gymnasiums without sacrificing low end sound quality. We chose The Earthquake so that Utah Valley DJ events would be fire.

The Cerwin-Vega CV EL 36DP, The Earthquake. This thing is a weapon. The folded‑horn design gives us long‑throw projection, meaning the bass travels farther and hits harder at distance. It’s perfect for high school dances, outdoor events, large gymnasiums and crowds that want to feel the bass. You can’t have all that extra sound without the corresponding cost, each Earthquake subwoofer weighs 188 pounds and costs twice as much as the JBL Eon718. With great capability comes great cost.

By going with the Earthquake subwoofers, we differentiated from every DJ in Utah that used direct radiating bass-reflex subwoofers. We can still do corporate parties in SLC, quinceañeras in Riverton, and Weddings in Ogden with our Lite DJ package. But for the clients that want to have an outdoor event or fill a gymnasium with bass we have the capability to do that with our Full DJ Package. The next time you are considering DJs for your Utah event, make sure you consider the size of your event space and if the DJ you are hiring has the capability to fill it with bass!

Back when Utah Valley DJs 1.0 was formed in Ogden Utah most DJs used compact disks and there was a fair debate about the sound quality between a CD and the new and much easier to move around format of MP3. I’ve read that MP3 was successful in condensing music files because it removed all the sound that humans could not hear and just kept the 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz range of sound that most people could hear. Of course, that prompted a debate that is older than MP3 files because audiophiles said they could tell the difference between CDs and MP3 which was just a continuation of an older debate about the difference between tapes and records or whatever the audiophile’s preferred method of listening was. It's all about the music…

  I remember standing in line at Media Play in Riverdale. It was the day after Christmas and my girlfriend and I were returning some duplicate CDs we got for Christmas. While we stood in line, we shared headphones and listened to Wonderwall by Oasis. As an Army veteran, I’ve stood in my share of lines but I remember that day in Media Play because of the music I listened to. I’m sure that you have a memory of a mundane time or place that you can recall because of the music.  With the rise of digital streaming, music is easy to come by. No more waiting in line to buy CDs, it is all at your fingertips. This is great for DJs because it allows better collaboration in set list creation. Today I could put a set list together and the customer could listen to the entire thing and make changes before their event. Putting Sound on Target

  As an Army veteran with decades of service to our country I've picked up some sayings that the Army uses to describe what it does. One of these sayings is, "Putting steel on target" a phrase that the artillery corps uses to describe what they do on the battlefield. As a DJ I like this idea because putting steel on target really means putting the right effects in the right place at the right time. This is what a DJ does when there is a crowd of people dancing to the music, the lights are creating a fun environment, and the fog machine is changing a regular space into a vibing dance floor. It's during these moments that memories are made. But just like in sports, where momentum can make or break a team, the momentum in your event can be made or broken by the right song selections, light programs and DJ actions.
